Beyond the bright red door, Dee Dee Duhn’s inspired choices from her world-wide travels range from the exotic to the whimsical, from the dramatic to the droll.

“People are surprised,” says Duhn. “People have no idea until they walk in that those unusual things are available and that the pricing is incredible.”

Tiny beaded boxes and wonderfully delicate notebooks are displayed next to ornate jewel boxes. Next shelf over are nautical home accents, while steps away a four-foot-tall, slender, carved giraffe shares space with a solid wooden tiger. Limited-edition designer purses are paired with unusual designs in necklace—“You can take a little black dress and turn it into something totally fabulous with that jewelry,” notes Duhn.

But the real drama lies just beyond, where furniture on a grand scale includes Four Hands sofas, a massive chess table with chess pieces taller than your hand, a six-foot-tall, golden rocking horse, a fainting couch with luxurious curves. Everywhere you look is a piece you can’t imagine finding anywhere else.

“You only need one really great piece of furniture, a dominant piece, then design the room around that,” advises Duhn. But which? New containers are “on the water” even now, bringing goods from Indonesia, Morocco, and Bali. They’ll include Vietnam pottery—the only pottery, says Duhn that can be out in the winter in Michigan. Her purchases are eco-conscious and include domestic merchandise as well.

Don’t miss the bargain tables for unique treasures starting at one dollar.

All of which proves their motto: you must pass through Customs in New Buffalo.
