Airport continues to negotiate with railroads

Negotiations continue with railroads to move tracks for runway expansion at the Gary/Chicago International Airport, while plans for that phase are moving from concept into engineering design.

Members of the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority approved the release of funds for those two activities at their meeting Thursday.

The board approved spending an additional $75,000 for the services of Kaplan Kirsch & Rockwell LLP, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm that specializes in railroad negotiations and legal matters. Read the rest of this entry »

The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority on Thursday voted 5-0 to approve an agreement more than a decade in the making that should clear the way for expanding its main runway.

The agreement with Canadian National Railway Co. provides for the reroute of railroad tracks that sit on an embankment just 130 feet from the northwest end of the airport’s main runway, airport attorney Patrick Lyp told the board.

“It’s the step that opens the door, so now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” board member John Evans said after the meeting.

Curry’s reign over the airport and relationship with the board has been contentious at times.

Airport authority nudges $7 million hangar project forward

A project to build a $7 million international aviation hub at the Gary/Chicago International Airport took one step forward on Thursday but did not yet win airport authority approval.

The authority board went ahead with a public hearing on the project, but it held off on taking any vote on ordinances needed before the Gary Jet Center can begin work on the project.

“It’s unanimous among the board this is a good project,” said Airport Authority President Nathaniel Williams at the authority’s regular monthly meeting. “We want to get it done.”

The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority on Thursday again will consider an agreement that would allow the Gary Jet Center to build a new $7 million flight facility.

A hearing on the agreement was abruptly canceled at last month’s authority meeting, and the owner of the Gary Jet Center says this week’s board action will make or break the project.

“It’s time to fish or cut bait,” said Gary Jet Center owner Wil Davis. “It’s time to vote it up or down.”
