[What is the SMS? | Goals of the SMS | Statewide Sponsors] The
Indiana Stock Market Simulation (SMS) Get your students excited about learning! Using actual data from the Stock Markets, teams are given a hypothetical $100,000 to create and manage a portfolio of stocks and mutual funds. Before they know it, students are learning about financial markets such as the New York Stock Exchange, understanding the basics of personal investing and enhancing skills learned in math, reading, and technology. Using the SMS in the classroom The Stock Market Simulation is well suited for students from grades four through twelve and fits into many different disciplines and activities such as social studies, business education, and mathematics. Teachers can organize the simulation to fit their particular needs. The SMS can also be used as an extra-curricular activity. Activity-based learning experiences, like the SMS, are an effective way to help students learn and apply difficult concepts. An article published in Social Education stated that active learning can be an efficient as well as an effective way to teach economic content. Students who participate in these type of activities enjoy their learning experience and are more likely to remember what they have learned. Furthermore, a 2002 survey on economic literacy given to twelfth graders by the Jumpstart Coalition revealed that students who played an interactive stock market simulation in class performed better on the survey than those who did not.
