In 1869, George Hammond built a slaughterhouse and meat packing plant, the largest in the world at that time, between the Calumet River and the Michigan Central Railroad. Marcus M. Towle established the first subdivision in the 1870’s, and named his permanent settlement and post office in honor of George Hammond. Hammond was incorporated as a town on December 4, 1883. An election was held on April 21, 1884 to incorporate Hammond as a city, and Marcus M. Towle was elected as the city’s first Mayor. One hundred and twenty-five years have passed for Hammond as a city, and the city now has its nineteenth Mayor. To honor this occasion, Mayor Thomas M.
