Snow days are so wonderful, because of that spontaneous opportunity for unexpected fun and cuddles and playtime! We don't have too many, but when we do, it's wonderful to enjoy the white stuff, extra cuddles, and the chance to spend that extra unexpected time together as a family.

My girl would be out in the snow 24/7 if I allowed her. She doesn't seem to feel the cold that I feel all day long NOT playing outside! And the funny thing is that I remember being the same way about playing in the snow. Somewhere along the way I lost that love, and I don't really miss it. Now I love to cuddle with her by the fire with our hot chocolate when she finally does come in... after I've forced her, of course!!

We had the crazy DC snow too and it kept us house bound for nearly 10 days. We learned a lot about each other and the multiple uses of underoos! It was a blast. http://thegypsymama.com/2010/02/15/ten-things-i-learned-from-being-snowbound-for-nearly-ten-days/

Ah snow days. I loved them as a kid (we got them if it was snowing!) Here in Ottawa though the likelihood of a snow day is pretty close to nil. We're more likely to have a transportation strike... Sometimes they cancel buses, but my understanding is that this just means that the parents have to find alternative transportation.

My niece (who is 7) jumped on the internet and googled her school district and "snow day" to check for one the other day!

I actually never watched the TV or listened to the radio for school closings - my mom was a teacher in my district (and my dad a teacher in another district). So I waited for the phone to ring because it always beat the TV. Now I get a text message from the local news station before my district calls me (I am a teacher too) about 50% of the time - I end up wondering why we still do a phone fan out! :)

And Jen - in my district there is a concern with the safety of the buses too. We are an extremely hilly district and if it's icy the buses can't always stop and that is very dangerous for the kids waiting at the bus stop. We tend to close before other less hilly districts do.

I see! Yeah I had to walk to school every day although my mom was home with us and didn't start work until the evenings. In middle/high school, we rode the bus. It sure was fun being able to stay home though!

Jen--The reason is generally for the safety of children who have to walk to the bus stop or walk to school. Not every child has a parent or guardian available to drive them in the morning, so usually the two hours gives the city/town enough time to clear the roads. Not always, though!

Totally remember that! I even remember what the little radio looked like that my mom would use to listen to see if school was cancelled or not. She would also listen to her "stories" on it while she did housework :)

I had a thought recently about school closings. Why exactly DO they close school just because of some snow? We are expected to dig our cars out and go to work-why aren't cars then allowed to take children to school? I know I LOVED it when I was a kid, and asked no questions, but to me it just seems strange when no one else gets to stay home because of some white stuff :)
