Believe me, if you find a dentist you trust and who is kind and caring, keep that dentist even if they don't take your insurance.

We had our first son when my husband and I were still in college. Along with a great education often comes a temporary lack of money and insurance. Needless-to-say, we were so concerned about paying rent and putting food on the table that the dentist wasn't even on the radar. I finally took him in when he had an up-all-night toothache. He was five. I dreaded taking him in because I thought for sure the dentist would only reinforce the guilt that had already sunk deep into my soul. Luckily he didn't seem judgemental at all, my little boy got his owie fixed, and I have been MUCH better with my younger kids.

We just went to the dentist this week, and ours happens to be WONDERFUL! Thank goodness. Because, like you, I don't happen to love going to the dentist. Of course, once I'm there and getting my teeth cleaned, I'm so happy I've made the time for it. My girls, on the other hand, LOVE the dentist. Hopefully that continues for awhile! :)

Yes, take your children to the dentist!! I was nervous going to the dentist as a kid, but I had enough good experiences and developed good teeth-cleaning habits to finally reach a point of no fear. Today at 23, I'm not ashamed to say that I look forward to going to the dentist (I love how my teeth feel after a cleaning!). As well, I can say that years of braces and pulled wisdom-teeth were a cinch because I didn't fear a doctor.

hm. So you're saying maybe I should take my almost-5 year-old to the dentist? :P That seems to be one thing I didn't do when I registered him for preschool... his eyes and ears are clean as whistles but I totally forgot about the teeth. Thanks!

It's certainly not the only answer, but when I needed to find a new dentist for our kids after our last move, I searched for pediatric dentists in our area. They are more used to dealing with kids and their unique needs and quirks. It turns a scary visit into something almost fun.

Oral hygiene is our greatest parenting fail so far. We have had insurance, we have not had insurance, we have changed insurance, etc. and I have just not made it a priority. I finally took my girls last year (at 6 and 7 years old) and miraculously they had no cavities! I have to take my 6 yo son to a pediatric dentist though, because regular equipment will not fit in his small mouth. Perhaps we will get on track this summer.

ugh.. I should probably start thinking about this soon right??
We just barely started being good about brushing, but I know we should keep up with the dentist before its to late.
Not looking forward to it.

I'm glad to read this, too! We took our son at 18 months, when we started noticing some minor discoloration on his front two teeth. Early childhood caries. =( His first dentist was hideous, the second beyond wonderful (in fact...I wish he could be my dentist!). Acoording to the dentist, my son was born with weak enamel, probably due to me having to do a few rounds of anti-biotics when pregnant...and then we were never really viligant about brushing until too late. I still beat myself up over this.
