Hi! I've found myself in the same boat recently. I was thinking around $10/hr for my 5 yr old, 3 yr old and 8 month old, but I will be around the house pretty much the whole time - I just can't lift due to a recent surgery. But I found this website http://www.babysitting-rates.com/ that kinda generalizes it all. Hope that helps!

Good for you for stepping out of your norm to get something important done. I am a cheap employer when it comes to our sitters. I usually pay about 7 dollars an hour, and that is for taking care of six kids! Depending on the length of time and what is asked of the sitter I may pay more, and the age of the sitter comes into play. If we are going to be 3 or more hours of awake time I always tell the sitter they can bring a friend, but I don't pay double, I end up paying each about 5 an hour. A lot of my sitters don't have to pay for their cars or their insurance and so the money I pay them is their fun money. They are all from our church, and I think most of them see it as a partial ministry to babysit. Now, when one of our friends who is in college or does have more financial obligations babysits I will pay more. It is not that I don't think my kids are worth paying for good care, just that I don't think it is necessary to say that care is only valuable at 10+ an hour. Anyway, I'm sure whatever you pay will be fine. I always say I must be paying enough because the sitters keep coming back. ;)

Babysitters get paid a lot more than you think... sitters around Chicago go for about $12/hr for one kid--so for two sitters, with four kids, for 3 hours, $120 is probably a safe bet.

It's funny, the sitters we've paid, are about $10 an hour. Thank God daycare is cheaper than that, at around $5 an hour, but they're with daycare longer. We have only paid a sitter once or twice, because we do pay daycare and so it's hard to justify more costs on top of that! Wish we had family closer too!

As a babysitter and now nanny, I know the rate varies greatly by location, number of children and age/experience of the sitter. I live in expensive Northern California and have made anywhere from $10-$15/hour. I am nearly always asked what I charge beforehand. In my own personal calculations, I am 22, can provide transportation, and have had about 10 years of solid experience with terrific references so I usually start my rate at $12/hour and add $1/hour per child.

care.com has a great rate calculator here:

Hope this helps!

I can remember back in the 1970's getting about 50 cents to $1.00 an hour. I'm glad you found some trustworthy ones.
