Happy Halloween!

October 31st, 2011 - By Stephanie Precourt

Happy Halloween!

My kids are so excited to trick or treat tonight. I’m happy it’s not raining! Do you take your kids trick or treating? What are they dressing up as for Halloween?

The fun doesn’t end tonight, thankfully. Taltree Arboretum will have the Trail of Scarecrows through this week, and I am really looking forward to checking out the Kids Art Project every Saturday until the end of the year at rTrail Collective Edge in downtown Valpo.

I also heard about some awesome events for kids coming up at The Yoga Room in Crown Point. Yoga for Kids Classes are now open for the Fall and Winter, 1-2:30 pm on Saturdays November 12 and December 10, and Sundays January 15, and February 12. Kids 4-11 years old will learn to develop strong, flexible & healthy bodies, increase concentration, focus & attention as well as build self-esteem and confidence among many other benefits of yoga. Classes are $15 with discounts for each additional child, and no prior experience necessary.

Also really cool is Bank of America’s Museums on Us this weekend November 5-6 (and the first weekend of every month hereafter). Just by showing your Bank of America bank card, you get free admission to the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, Du Sable Museum of African American History, Chicago History Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

What do have planned to do with your kids in November?

Mom’s Night Out- Please Come! (Actually, Don’t)

September 19th, 2011 - By Stephanie Precourt

Edited: Unfortunately the Mom’s Night Out has been canceled! I still strongly encourage you to at least check out Amy’s book. It’s one of my very favorites!

Next Monday September 26 at 7PM my awesome friend Amy Wilson, writer of the hilarious momoir When Did I Get Like This?: The Screamer, the Worrier, the Dinosaur-Chicken-Nugget-Buyer, and Other Mothers I Swore I’d Never Be (and other great talents- you can check her out on IMDb) will be hanging out at Dream Dinners in Chicago. Enjoy a nice kid-free evening presented by Macaroni Kid Chicago Loop as Amy reads from and discusses her book (you can sit by me- I’ll be there!)

During the reading, you’ll enjoy the good eats from Dream Dinners and a few lucky gals will go home with a ready to cook dinner. Yes, please. Tickets are $30 and includes dinner, wine, and a copy of When Did I Get Like This? (I happen to LOVE this book.)

To RSVP and for more info, check out Macaroni Kid Chicago Loop.

Spend a day at the Nature Museum

January 29th, 2011 - By Stephanie Precourt

Exploring trees

We explored trees inside out at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum - you can check the Exploring Trees exhibit now until February 6. We might be heading back just one last time before it ends- that’s how much Ivy & Gray loved it. (I’m thinking it might be a great “get out of the house during the Super Bowl” activity…)

The huge tree playground in the center of the exhibit was a huge hit, with plenty to climb and crawl through. And the awesome “green screen” dress up stage where the kids could see themselves flying through the trees on a TV screen was absolutely adorable.

Even if you can’t make it in the next week, there’s so many other fun things for the kids to do year round at the museum, especially spending time in the amazing butterfly haven.

Bonus: the small gift shop at the entrance/exit of the museum is full of affordable items, including snacks and beverages for the kids priced so that you don’t break the bank especially compared to other Chicago destinations. Like!

The museum is open every day, with a free day on Thursdays, and children under 3 are always free. Street parking is readily available (especially this time of year, so go!)
