On Father’s Day

June 12th, 2010 - By Stephanie Precourt

Tomorrow I’m heading downtown with my older boys to attend a fun event and fashion show at one of Chicago’s hippest boutiques, Frankie’s On The Park, where the kids get to decorate a tee shirt for Father’s Day at the one of a kind Graffiti Bar. (Sounds like fun- I’m really looking forward to it!)

The peeps at Frankie’s On The Park have asked on their blog “What is your favorite Father’s Day memory?”

I must confess that I don’t really recall any memorable Father’s Days from my childhood (or any Mother’s Days for that matter, either) - I know that every year I would usually get my Dad a book or a T-shirt or Whitman’s Sampler (or in recent years Hershey’s Pot Of Gold), and pretty much still do to this day. If I asked him what he wanted, he’d say NOTHING. So I don’t ask him that any more. He’s easy to please.

Now my Father-in-law, he’ll hand you his gift wish list, so you always know what to get him (he’ll even note the size collar and sleeve length.) Hey- that’s pretty easy to please, too.

But when I really put thought to it, my absolute favorite Father’s Day memory was back in 2007- we celebrated Father’s Day with both my dad and Father-in-law. We went to New Buffalo, MI for the day and ate on the patio at Brewster’s, had ice cream at Oink’s, and walked along the beach. At one moment both of my “Dads” were sitting on the wall overlooking the boats on the lake, and I snapped a photo. I am not kidding you that I have spent the past two days searching my hard drives for that dang photo. But, for now, it’s just in my head. A pleasant memory.

So instead here’s a photo of my Dad on Father’s Day last year, at the beach. Another great time.

It’s a blessing to me that both my husband’s Dad and my Dad are friends, and that we can celebrate together with our families. And I know this year more good memories will be made as we are all having Father’s Day together again (including my grandfather, too!). It’s pretty awesome.

Do you have any Father’s Day traditions for your hubby or your Dad(s)?
