The Great Outdoors

Waking up to five inches of snow in early December doesn’t necessarily make me feel full of Christmas spirit. In fact, it kinda fills me with dread of the long winter that lies ahead. The long, cold, snowy, icy, blistery, messy winter.

To put it simply, I’m not a fan of winter. Which may make you wonder why I live in this area. The answer is plain and simple: I have no idea. Maybe it’s because we grew up here? or because our family lives here? Maybe because we love Lake Michigan and how close we live to Chicago? Probably.

But I still don’t enjoy winter and the cold. I do, however, enjoy heat and sun and shade and beaches, though. Just in case you were wondering.

So, this morning, when we woke up to the snowfall, although I was not excited, our children were thrilled. Our daughter is four, our son is three - so it’s natural they would be excited.

However, there is another reason, and please don’t judge me, but, we have never taken our kids out to play in the snow. I don’t find it to be that big of deal because it’s cold outside and wind chills are dangerous and well, we just haven’t done it, yet.

Until today.

We literally spent forty minutes preparing all of us to brave the elements. A total of seven pairs of pants, eight pairs of socks, ten shirts, four pairs of gloves and four pairs of boots. (and much, much more.) All of which are now lying in a pile beside the door.

So, we head outside and the three year old boy looks like this:

So, after five minutes of trying to talk him into how much fun snow is (which is difficult considering snow is not fun), he and my husband head back indoors. To the warmth, near the coffee and cupcakes.

I, in the meantime, stay outside with the snow princess:

Who, after seeing her joy in the snow, may not be my daughter:

But I’m pretty sure she is, after all, she loves hot chocolate. Just like her mother. Maybe winter isn’t so bad after all.

What’s with your son and his dislike of not only snow, but also sand?!?!? Craziness!

I LOVE the picture of your little snow princess and all the snow she threw in the air. Awesome shot!

Poor little fella. I bet he learns to love it someday. Even if Mama doesn’t.

My kids and I LIVE for snow days! My son thinks they were created just for him. I saw some tiny flakes coming down when I went to the mailbox…I’m prayin’ for a snow day!

I’m with you on the snow, man. It’s cold, it’s wet, and it always manages to find the 1/16 inch space between the bottom of your sleeve and the top of your gloves. Ick.

But of course the first thing Jake asked once he heard school was cancelled was “Can we go outside”? Ugh. I don’t get it.

And I’m coveting your camera on this site too.

It’s like we’re twins seperated at birth and a few years. I’m not a snow fan either.

We only got about 1″ of snow today, but my kids were thrilled! They kept talking ALL the way to school about how this was the best day of their lives! (I swear it’s not the first time they’ve seen snow) They even went as far as to say that they wished it would snow EVERYDAY! ….I said, but then you wouldn’t be able to swim in your swimming pool, and they said, “that’s ok, it would turn into ice and we could ice skate on it!” How funny. I’m sure pretty soon they’ll be changing their tune though.
I really love the pictures of the kids in the snow. It’s very typical of both of them. Too funny!

My son was the same way when he was three. But now, he will stay out there until I make him come in.

If it was up to me, I would not leave my house until Spring. I hate the cold.
