Close Calls

April 21st, 2011 - By Jamie Bissot

At what age do kids start to figure out those awful things like….the Easter Bunny might not be real?

My observant 5-yr-old seems to be snooping a bit more than usual these days.  I had a very close call today when we were leaving a store and she spied a few Target bags in the cargo area of my car.  I could see curiosity flash across her face, but I distracted her in just enough time to help her forget what she may or may not have seen. I’m crafty like that.

I don’t look forward to the day when my kids don’t believe in the magic of childhood fantasies.  I love the way they look in wonder when they come downstairs on Christmas morning.  I love the way she ran downstairs to announce her first visit from the Tooth Fairy.  I’m going to hate it when the magic of “believing” is gone.

I don’t recall when I stopped believing.  I know I was much older than five.  Still, I wish I could capture some of that again for myself – the magic and mystery of believing in princesses and fairy tales, of Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny.  Now, I happily watch my own children as they delight in the “magic” of the seasons.  I wish I could capture it and keep it forever, but sadly I know I they’re not small enough to *believe* forever.

When did your kids stop believing?  Even better – do your kids still believe?  I hope so.

Don’t forget about the fun stuff going on:
