So S.A.D.

This week has flown by for us, and what seemed like it would never get here (first day of “normal” pre-school) has now come and gone with barely a noise. Tuesday was Day 1 of the new school, and I spent the whole day in the class with my son. Montessori is amazing, and I hope to write more about it and maybe squash some of the negative stereotypes out there. If you love the idea of Montessori, it’s better than you think…if you hate the idea of Montessori, it’s not what you think. Day 2, which was on deck to be a really hard day since my son would be going it alone, turned out to be a Snow Day. Not a great way to transition, that’s for sure. I celebrated by spending the entire day in bed with a massive migraine. Woo to the hoo. I couldn’t find my sunglasses, so I had to wear a hood over my head to block the light. Snow is bright ya’ll. Just sayin. Oh and P.S., there was no reason to have a snow day. It was sunny and clear all day (except for the huge mounds of snow on everything), and all the roads were clear. What’s the big deal Indiana? Put on your big girl panties and get over it next time.

I checked the weather report tonight and apparently it’s supposed to snow until forever. I officially know what it might feel like to have Seasonal Affective Disorder, because the joy in my face has been replaced with dry skin and a perpetual grimace. I think it’s hilarious that a name for being depressed in the winter is called S.A.D. Some marketing guy somewhere is still laughing that his boss took him seriously on that one.

You native Midwesterners will have to fill me in…is this the point in winter when you want to cry every day that you wake up and it’s still not Spring? Because if it’s not, I have big problems. My only solace is that back in California it’s been raining something biblical, so I’m not missing much. Oh but when that rain stops and the sun comes out…so will the roses. I lived down the street from where they have the Rose Parade every year and so roses are a big deal in those parts. They take their roses so seriously that you are kindof an outcast if you don’t grow your own. The good news is that it’s rather effortless to grow them if you pay someone to do it. It’s nice how life works that way.

I know I’m not alone here in feeling blah, because it looks like The Funk has been going around in these parts. I’m trying to stay logical and remember that eventually the snow will melt and not come back again till next winter. The sun will come out, and along with it my blindingly white legs. I bet you can’t wait.

Until then, I’ll have to comfort myself with awesome warm socks, the new season of Lost, and a big bright light shining in my face so I don’t get S.A.D.

As a post-script…I got so sad (or S.A.D.) that I drifted off while writing this (as you also may have done while reading this) and accidentally deleted the whole thing. In place of this post was the letter M over and over. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Apparently now I’m a chanting monk. Go figure.

Yeah…that’s how I feel all winter…Winter sucks!…And Indiana is actually quite aggressive when it coems to snow days…they don’t call too many of them…I can remember when I was younger that everyone else got snow days (chicago-land) and we never did. Could it be a private school thing? Did ALL of the Porter County schools get cancelled?

I know like everywhere is cancelled today…but it is STILL snowing…so I kinda get it.

Hope all is well on your end of the block…See you soon.

Uh yeah…today is DEFINITELY a snow day. But no, it wasn’t just private school that was closed Wed….they go by the District, and the whole District was closed.

I’m out of cheese, so therefore the world is ending, but other than that we are golden.

You’re so funny! I never thought about the fact that S.A.D. might be a marketing ploy! Thanks for making me smile on this irritatingly snowy Friday.

My daughter made me a smoothie out of fresh strawberries, bananas, plain yogurt and orange juice, and that jolt of fresh fruit and vitamins did wonders for my mental health! Oh, and the new episode of Lost didn’t hurt…

    Hang in there!
