| Article: | Revised boundaries revealed by Hammond School Board Changes made to place students now attending soon-to-close Spohn Middle School. HAMMOND -- The first steps to accommodate the closure of Spohn Middle School in June and the move of students to other schools for the 2002-03 school year was taken by the Hammond School Board on Monday evening. The proposed boundaries were made public at the meeting. The proposed changes are as follows: Clark Middle School: north boundary, Illinois state line and Lake Michigan southeast to Whiting line; east boundary, Whiting city limits and Lake Michigan south along the boundary between Hammond, Whiting and East Chicago to the center of 141st Street; south boundary, Grand Calumet River; west boundary, from the center of Gostlin Street and the Illinois state line north to Lake Michigan. Hammond High School and Eggers Middle School: north boundary, Illinois state line and Grand Calumet River, southeast to the Hammond/East Chicago boundary at White Oak Avenue, south to the East Chicago/Hammond boundary along Michigan Street, west to the New York Central Railroad, south on a line intersecting Berkley Avenue; east boundary, from the centerline of Berkley Avenue, south along the eastern boundary of Memorial Park to the centerline of Field Street extended; south boundary, from the centerline of Field Street extended, west to the centerline of Calumet Avenue, south to the Little Calumet River, west along the river to the Illinois state line; west boundary, Little Calumet River and the Illinois state line, north to the Grand Calumet River. Gavit Middle School: north boundary, center of Calumet Avenue and center of Field Street, east to Pullman-Standard Co., north along eastern boundary of Memorial Park to the intersection of Berkley Avenue and the Norfolk and Western Railroad, and then north along a line intersecting the New York Central Railroad, then east to the intersection of the Hammond/East Chicago boundary, to the New York Central Railroad; east boundary, the New York Central Railroad, south to the Little Calumet River; south boundary; intersection of the Little Calumet River and the New York Central Railroad, west along the river to the center of Calumet Avenue; west boundary, center of Calumet Avenue and the Little Calumet River, north to the center of Field Street. Maps will soon be available to parents seeking to understand the boundaries. After 30 days, the boundary changes will have a second reading before it is voted on by the school board. In other action, Barbara Fleming, principal of Spohn Middle School, and Alexander Fraser, assistant principal, will become the principal and assistant, respectively, at Eggers Middle School during the 2002-03 school year. The current principal, David Spitzer, has asked for a transfer to teach English. An interim assistant principal has taken the place of Robin Latman, who resigned last year. |
