Five people were hospitalized Saturday after hitting the median while traveling westbound on Interstate 80 in LaPorte County, state police said.
Starlette M. Mowery, 22, drove a Isuzu SUV off the road at 8:05 a.m. and hit the crossover area in the median, causing the vehicle to roll several times, police said.
Mowery, 23-year-old David A. Fulkersin, 3-year-old Alexis Fulkersin, 16-year-old Amy Fulkersin and 5-year-old Jamie Fulkersin, all of Berwick, Pa., were ejected from the vehicle. It was unknown if they were wearing seat belts, police said.
Mowery was airlifted to Memorial Hospital and Health System in South Bend with head trauma and broken bones, police said. Alexis was transported to LaPorte Hospital and Health Services and later airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis with head trauma, a ruptured spleen and broken bones, police said.
David A. Fulkersin was taken to LaPorte Hospital with head trauma and broken bones; Amy Fulkersin was taken to the same hospital with head trauma, a ruptured spleen and broken bones and Jamie Fulkersin was also taken to that hospital with bruises, police said.
No one was arrested, but the investigation into the accident is continuing.
