Pssst, kid
Take a crack at hard-cooked eggs. Once you master the art of boiling water, you can whip up deviled eggs, egg salad and egg sandwiches. "The Mix-It-Up Cookbook" by Tracy McGuinness walks youngsters through 18 kid-friendly recipes (pizza, noodles, etc.) then outlines easy ways to them into 100 side dishes and entrees. Clear directions, droll illustrations and tempting photos make this an ideal first cookbook for 10-year-olds up. That said, grown-ups can glean a few tips, too, e.g. stash onions in the freezer for 30 minutes and you won't cry while cutting them and "chop" nuts by popping them into a zippered plastic bag and rolling them with a rolling pin.
FYI: This title from the AmericanGirl Library is $14.95.
Water, water, everywhere …
Exactly where you want it. Moen's new Aberdeen pulldown kitchen faucet telescopes out 8-1/2 inches so you can water plants, fill vases or rinse greasy pans without having to empty the sink first. A "pause" button starts and stops the flow of water and switches it from a stream to spray for heavy-duty cleaning. The high-arced faucet is available in one- and two-handle models, in chrome, glacier (white), ivory, sand, stainless and copper, and with optional soap/lotion dispenser.
FYI: Prices for the one-handle kitchen faucet with pulldown spout start at $325.
