Rock ‘n' roll girls will be getting loud and proud on Monday night at Wise Fool's Pub (2270 N. Lincoln Ave.) during "Girls Night Out," an all-female showcase that is now a big part of the annual "International Pop Overthrow" convention that descends upon Chicago every April.

The I.P.O. kicks off tonight and dozens of bands will perform at a variety of city venues before it wraps up on May 2. Check out the full schedule of I.P.O. events on line at: www.internationalpopoverthrow.com Among the many women with attitudes and guitars who will step up to stake their claim at rock 'n' roll fame will be Jana Peri, who plugs in at 8:30 p.m. for a 30-minute set she hopes will be noticed by some A&R record honcho with deep pockets.

This columnist first met the sassy native New Yorker while she was paying rent on her apartment as a music publicist for a public relations firm.

This time when Peri called, it was not merely to hawk the music of some artist she was being paid to talk up, but rather to push her own musical career. Peri, who left the publicist gig in favor of chasing the dream she helped some of her clients obtain, was tapping her Windy City press contacts to make us aware that she was coming our way with amp in hand.

Peri is a fair songwriter and an energetic rocker, judging from her four-song demo CD, which soon will be replaced by a full-length commercial album. She has been in the recording studio the past week, laying down some of the new original tunes she will bring to the Wise Fool's stage.

To these ears, Peri's music sounds like someone tossed Ronnie Spector, Patti Smith and The Ramones into a blender. The frothy result is best described as melodic New Wave-style pop that is driven by guitar. Peri's lyrics, while not offensive, at times reflect the snarly and punkish attitude so inherent to Big Apple rock. A prime example is her single, "Dating Sucks," which has been included on Rockergirl Magazine's "Discoveries 2004" compilation CD.

At 4 p.m. Monday, music fans of all ages can meet Peri and check out her music first-hand during a free in-store concert at The Record Emporium (3346 N. Paulina Ave.) in Chicago. More info: www.janaperi.com Also performing Monday at the Wise Fool's Pub "Girls Night Out" showcase will be the female-fronted Pamela Richardson Band, The Dollyrots, The Snaggs, Bang Sugar Bang, The Locals and MariZen.
