PORTAGE | Crossing Salt Creek is quite an adventure, as about 240 runners learned Monday morning during the Memorial Day Trail Run Extreme 10K.
Several slid down a 10-foot embankment - on their back sides - on their way into the 25-yard water crossing. Others had trouble grabbing a rope to climb out.
One man said he nearly lost his wedding ring while navigating his way through the waist-deep water, which runners crossed twice during the 6.2-mile event through the hilly trails of Imagination Glen Park.
"It was extreme," said Sarah Hansen, the women's overall winner in 51 minutes, 1 second. "It was fun to get muddy, but you really have to be careful."
Hansen, of Chicago, edged Valparaiso's Stacia Yoon (51:25). Karen Nagel of Valparaiso, winner of several local road races this year, injured an ankle early in the race and had to drop out.
The overall winner was Justin Stadt, a 2003 Crown Point graduate who now runs on the Purdue cross country and track teams. He cruised to the finish line in 37:55, a per-mile pace of 6:07, to easily beat second-place finisher Mike Vega.
"I got out fairly well," Stadt said. "I didn't really have a plan, because this race is just too much fun.
"I can take turns fairly well for my size, so that definitely helped on the trails."
Stadt had a huge lead by the second creek crossing, about a mile from the finish. Vega, a former Lake Station runner who won this year's Taltree Ten in Valparaiso, knew he would have to settle for second.
"He pulled away from me," said Vega, who finished in 41:08. "I wanted to try to close in on him, but he kept getting a bigger lead on me."
Stadt, who will be a junior in the fall, says he is just about recovered from foot problems that slowed him during the recent outdoor track season and is looking forward to a good cross country season in the fall. He had run the Extreme a couple times before, and learned a valuable lesson.
"I didn't wear spikes before, and I got trounced," he said.
"If you don't wear spikes," said Vega, "you're going down."
Yoon was surprised she had a chance to finish as the first woman, and by the time she realized it, it was too late to make a move. She finished 46th overall, while Hansen was 44th.
"I tried, but I couldn't catch her," Yoon said. "I just love this course - it's my favorite race of all time."
She isn't alone. Portage's Norm Eikman loves running so much that he competed in two races Monday morning.
He ran the Lakeshore Half Marathon in Chicago that began at 6:15. Eikman said he finished that race in 1 hour, 47 minutes, got in his car at 8:20. and made it to Portage for the Extreme at 9.
