HOBART | As a fitting tradition, winners and top placers from the annual Brickyard Run get bricks as trophies.
On that note, you wonder if Sandra Stefanski is planning to build a house.
On Monday, the Crown Point 43-year-old won yet another overall female title with a 5-mile time of 30:51.
"I don't know ... I say I got about 10 of these," Stefanski said. "I know I lost here a couple of times."
That's about the way it goes for Stefanski on the road running circuit ... she's able to keep better track of when she doesn't win than when she does. Not bad for someone who never ran in high school.
"I mainly played tennis," she said. "I starting running 22 years ago to lose weight.
"I'm not as fast as I used to be ...(last year, Stefanski's winning time was two seconds faster) ... but I'm hanging on."
Justin Stadt, 20, of Crown Point also was a defending champion, winning the overall male title with a time of 25:59 -- 47 seconds faster than last year.
"The conditions were awesome," said Stadt, who runs cross country at Purdue. "The temperature was ideal.
"I was running with two of my buddies. I didn't pull away until the last water stop."
Over 330 runners participated in the 20th annual Brickyard Run sponsored by the American Red Cross of Northwest Indiana. Next year, the race will be sponsored by the Hobart YMCA.
