DYER | Athletic teams have fields of their own, and some Dyer dog owners say it's their turn.
Dog owner Holly Topp appeared at the Park Board meeting last week on the issue. The board also acknowledged three letters and e-mails expressing interest or support for a dog park.
However, only 40 percent of respondents to a recent park survey listed a dog park as a top priority. Many more wanted the town to focus on a community center or recreational opportunities.
Topp said there are plenty of residents in Dyer who'd like a place to take their dogs.
Currently, dogs are not allowed in town parks.
Topp questioned whether that could be changed.
"There's been some resistance to that," board President Tim Ring said.
Vice President Gary Sprigg, a dog owner, has regularly asked about changing the park policy or creating a dog park. He said he would welcome either option.
The Park Board currently has a lot on its plate, including a master plan, developing a Central Park, a bond issue and funding park improvements. Ring said if the board did decide to build a dog park, it would need to be sizeable and fenced. With the parks and recreation budget tight, Ring indicated financial help would be welcome.
Topp was amenable, saying she belongs to a few local clubs that might be willing to handle a fundraiser. "Let me know what you need," she said.
