Burglars knew what they were doing at antique shop

CHESTERTON | The owners of Russ & Barbs Antiques told police someone knew what they were doing when they broke into the business Friday and stole up to $60,000 worth of items.

The owners, who live adjacent to the business at 222 Lincoln Ave., said they did not hear a thing, but noticed the power go off at 4 a.m., according to police.

They pointed out how the people responsible knew which expensive items to take, along with the cash register.

Both the power and telephone service had been cut at the time of the burglary, police said.

VU student accused of pulling stop sign out of ground

VALPARAISO | A 21-year-old Valparaiso University student was arrested on theft and public intoxication charges after telling police he pulled a stop sign out of the ground in anger.

Police were called early Sunday to a physicians parking area near the Porter hospital emergency room and were told a man was dragging a stop sign across the concrete surface.

They found Brian Engebrecht, of 803 Brown St., who reportedly told officers he was angry and drunk.

Police: Suspect shocked with Taser after officer pushed

VALPARAISO | Police said they shocked a man with a Taser Friday night when he attempted to flee and avoid arrest.

Police were called to the 7-Eleven store at 708 Lincolnway just before 9 p.m. in response to a man yelling profanities at customers.

They found Jesse Brown, 18, of 362 1/2 Morgan, who denied the accusations.

When police attempted to handcuff Brown, they said he pushed an officer and tried to flee. He was shocked and subdued with a Taser gun.

Report of injury lands Hobart man in jail on several charges

CHESTERTON | Police said they were investigating a report of a motorist bleeding in the parking lot of Speedway on Calumet Road when the driver sped off.

The driver, Todd Barbian, 34, of 1470 Grand Isle Court in Hobart, led officers on a high-speed pursuit, police said.

Police said they found a stolen purse and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Barbian was charged with resisting law enforcement, three counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and possession of stolen property and paraphernalia. He was also cited for passing on the right and disregarding an automatic traffic signal.

Man shocked with Taser during scuffle at bar

PORTAGE | Police said they shocked a man with a Taser gun after he began fighting with officers at Clancy's bar, 3619 Central Ave.

Police said they responded to a disturbance at the bar at 1:40 a.m. Saturday and found Roberto DelGardo, 22, of 6430 Lute Road, fighting.

Police said they used the Taser to gain control of DelGardo. The young man was charged with battery to law enforcement, public intoxication and resisting arrest.

Theft. Patricia Linderman told police someone broke into her vehicle and stole a purse while it was parked outside the Coach Light bar, 361 N. Calumet Road.

Vandalism. Tanya Douthitt told police someone scratched the side of her vehicle and she believes it occurred while parked in the area of 500 West and County Road 1100 North.

Fraud. Laura Susko told police she found several charges to Internet pornography sites on her bank statement. The theft was valued at $115.

Burglary. Charna Tucker told police someone broke into her house in the 700 block of Baums Bridge Road and stole cash and a PlayStation game. The loss was valued at $250.

Theft. William David told police someone stole tools from his vehicle while it was parked at the Super 8 Motel along U.S. 20.
