Man charged with heroin, pot possession
VALPARAISO | A Washington Township man has been charged with possessing heroin and marijuana.
Police said Kristopher Greer, 20, of 583 E. U.S. 30, had the drugs with him Wednesday while in the area of 1405 Burlington Beach Road.
He also was charged with maintaining a common nuisance, possession of paraphernalia and public intoxication.
Police seek tips, offer reward in garage burglary
JACKSON TOWNSHIP | Porter County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for committing this week's Crime of the Week, the Aug. 30 burglary of a garage at 651 E. Ind. 2.
Someone entered the building through an unlocked door and stole two dirt-style motorcycles, police said.
One bike is a green-and-white Kawasaki KX 125 cc, with a number plate 48 on the front. The second bike is a red-and-white 2002 Honda CR 125 cc, with Woody Woodpecker cartoon stickers on the side.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 342-7867.
Officer arrests juvenile after scuffles
PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A juvenile was taken into custody Thursday after struggling with a Porter County sheriff's officer, police said.
Officer Jason Praschak was called to a residence on McCool Road on Thursday morning to take into custody a juvenile with a current detention order. While being handcuffed, the 17-year-old boy attempted to pull away and run, but he immediately was grabbed by Praschak, police said. They struggled and fell to the ground before Praschak could handcuff the boy.
During a search, Praschak found what he believed to be a pipe with marijuana residue, police said. The teen was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with resisting law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Couple accused of fraudulent return
VALPARAISO | A man and woman were arrested Thursday after employees at Menards reported they attempted to return an item taken from the store.
James Smith, 56, of Union Mills, and Colleen Gallacher, 19, of Walkerton, attempted to return a $199 air nailer without a receipt. Employees became suspicious, and the store manager checked security video. Police said the video showed Smith and Gallacher entering the store without the air nailer and walked to the aisle where the product was located and took it off the shelf.
Smith was charged with theft and false informing, and Gallacher was charged with attempted theft.
CHESTERTON
Wednesday
Bike recovered. The owners of the Fourth Street Theater provided police with a boy's blue dirt bike that was left outside the facility. The value was placed at $50.
Thursday
Theft. David Wells told police that his corporate IBM laptop computer was stolen from the back seat of his car sometime between 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Thursday
Theft. Charlson Construction reported the theft of two televisions, a 32-inch Panasonic HDTV and a 50-inch Panasonic HDTV, from a house in the 2300 block of Throughwoods Drive. The house was unoccupied, but the TVs had been delivered there. The televisions were valued at $3,500

Wednesday
Vandalism. Police observed a portable toilet on fire at Fessler Field, 330 West County Road 700 North. The damage was valued at $100.
Thursday
Vandalism. Magdi Mourani told police his 1997 Buick was vandalized by someone trying to pry open the doors and trunk at his home in the 700 block of Juniper Road.
Thursday
Theft. Craig Trinoskey reported the theft of three Portage Real Estate signs from his front yard in the 400 block of Piedmont.
UNION TOWNSHIP
Wednesday
Recovered vehicle. Police discovered a stolen Jaguar vehicle burning at the intersection of County Roads 450 North and 750 West. The car was reported stolen Sept. 17 from Crown Point.
Thursday
Theft. The parent of an 11-year-old girl reported that her purse, containing a cellular phone, was stolen while the girl was at play practice Thursday evening at the Wheeler High School auditorium.

Wednesday
Theft. Charles O'Bringer told police someone stole several items, including a handgun, from his vehicle and home in the area of 200 South County Road 600 West.

Thursday
Theft. An employee of Air-Serv reported that the air machine at the pilot Travel Center, 4105 E. Morthland Drive, was broken into and $72 in coins was taken. The estimated cost of repair is $100.
