HAMMOND | In a continuing effort to advance emergency preparedness, Purdue University Calumet is introducing a homeland security course during the spring 2007 semester.

The course, "OLS (Organizational Leadership and Supervision) 590: Foundations of Homeland Security," is intended for seniors and graduate students, as well as students pursuing the Emergency Management professional certificate, which is believed to be the first such program offered in Indiana. Class sessions will be held Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:20.

The spring semester begins Jan. 16. Registration for spring semester classes continues.

"This is the first Homeland Security course we have offered at Purdue Calumet," said Instructor/Lecturer Dean R. Larson. "This class and a follow-up course planned for Fall 2007 will provide students the information and skills needed to help achieve national preparedness for disaster."

Larson, who offers extensive experience in industry, is active in various regional and statewide emergency preparedness initiatives and organizations. He also directs regular emergency preparedness exercises for Purdue Calumet administrators.

"OLS 590: Foundations of Homeland Security" is designed to introduce students to fundamental issues related to preventing, mitigating, preparing for, responding to and recovering from major catastrophic events, both intentional and unintentional, that threaten the security and well-being of private and public sector resources and infrastructures.

"The class will provide an opportunity for students to work together in an interdisciplinary project setting on problems that face our country in preparing for a disaster," Larson said. "Though we have achieved a great deal since 9/11, the experience of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita give strong evidence that we still have much to do to achieve national preparedness. Homeland security needs educated graduates from a wide variety of disciplines."
