PREP REPORT

Area athletes got their pens out and signed on the dotted line Wednesday as the early signing period began for winter and spring sports.

Among those making it official was Homewood-Flossmoor guard Kevin Dillard, who signed with Southern Illinois. The returning Times All-Area first-teamer is ranked eighth among the state's senior prospects by ChicagoHoops.com. He's also No. 139 nationally on Rivals.com's Class of 2008 list.

Marian Catholic had eight athletes sign letters of intent, including five for NCAA Division I schools.

Spartan golfers Sammi Sloan and Ann Vrdolyak signed with Illinois and Iowa, respectively; baseball infielder Andres Rodriguez signed with Eastern Kentucky; softball player Ashley Cann signed with Northern Illinois; and gymnast Rachel Montoya signed with Illinois-Chicago.

Marian's other signees were Katie Healy, to Lewis for softball; and girls basketball players Alysha Ferry to Saint Xavier and Jen Szala to Saint Joseph's.

University High 37, St. Francis deSales 16: The Pioneers (0-1) dropped their season opener at the University High Thanksgiving Tournament despite six points from Rachael Borum. Ernestina Armenta added four points. SFDS scored just five points in the first half.
