CALUMET CITY | T.F. North went to the canvas for the 10-count when Mouther McAuley opened the third quarter with 10 unanswered points.
After battling to a 34-34 tie after one half, Times No. 2 T.F. North committed three quick turnovers and the Mighty Macs used it to their advantage in a 74-52 win over the Meteors.
"I think our energy level went down and some of us gave up a little bit," North sophomore Karisma Chapman said. "Then they started hitting those 3s and I told everyone to not give up."
Mo Sullivan hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight of her 22 points in the third quarter as McAuley outscored the Meteors 27-11 in the period. Sullivan, who tied teammate Sarah Garcia for tops on her team in scoring, said McAuley knew it had to come out strong to start the third quarter.
"We knew we had to get the game our way, the up-tempo," Sullivan said. "We just kept hitting our shots and played good teamwork, good defense. We wanted to win this game real bad."
Bayeena Abdul led the Meteors (5-2) in scoring with 13 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Chapman had 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks.
North coach Tim Zasada said his team has to learn to finish against top-tier opponents.
"I thought we were very focused the first half, actually we should have been up by two at half, we let them score off an inbound play, but we hustled the first half," Zasada said. "We knew and we told them that if you let down, they will lull you to sleep and it will be over.
"We need to play four quarters and not just a half or three quarters. That is the bottom line."
McAuley's only two losses were to Times No. 1 Marian Catholic.
Chapman said she and her teammates like playing a good schedule because of the challenge.
"We know it will make us better for our conference games," Chapman said. "We just failed to get back on defense."
