TALENT SHOW | Hobart
Hobart Middle School will hold a Talent Show at 7 p.m. April 3 at the school, 705 E. Fourth St. Talented students in grades 6 to 8, plus some of their teachers, will be singing, dancing and playing instruments. Tickets are $3 for adults, and $1 for students and seniors. Proceeds from the shows ticket sales will benefit Riley's Children's Hospital.

REGION IDOL CONTEST AUDITIONS | Crown Point
The two-day auditions for the Fourth Annual Region Idol Contest will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. April 3 and April 4 at the Hall of Justice, 220 S. Main St. The contest will run consecutive Fridays beginning at 7 p.m. April 11 and ending May 23. Entrants must be at least 21 years old, and a $25 entry fee is due with the entry form by March 28. Admission to the auditions and competition is a $5 donation at the door and a $10 donation on the final night of competition. Higher donations will be accepted. Proceeds benefit Multiple Sclerosis Society, Indiana chapter. Since 2005, Region Idol has raised more than $30,000 toward charitable programs. BENEFIT FOR FAMILY | Hobart
American Legion Post 54 will host the Jeremy Simpson Memorial Celebration and Family Benefit from 2 p.m. until midnight March 29 at the post, 208 S. Linda St. Donation cost is $10 per person with children 5 years and younger admitted free. Food, beverages and raffle tickets will be available for purchase. SIDEWALK WORK | Hobart
City of Hobart is accepting applications for this year's 50/50 public sidewalk replacement program. The cost of removing and replacing existing public sidewalks with residential property owners is $6.50 per square foot and will be shared with the city on a 50 percent basis. Construction is expected to begin in June and be completed in August. Any Hobart resident interested in participating in this program should pick up an application between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the Office of the City Engineer, 414 Main St., or visit the city’s website at www.city.hobart.in.us and use the shortcut link. All applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. May 16. Sidewalk replacement will be done in order of priority based on need for repair until all funds are utilized.

HEROS FUNDRAISER | Lowell
A family fundraising event will be held March 30 to benefit Military HEROS, a newly formed foundation aimed at helping military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The fundraiser will be held from noon to 7 p.m. March 30 at D.C.'s Country Junction, 3599 W. 161st Ave. The event will feature bands such as Scamp, Shud Up and Drive, Flint Lock, Country Junction, Spare Time and Nick Danger. Raffle prizes will include a guitar autographed by country singer Mark Chestnut and two front-row tickets to any country concert at the Midwest Amphitheater in Tinley Park, Ill. There also will be activities for children, including face painting and balloon animals. Tickets are $10 per person with ages 15 and younger admitted free. Sondra Julian, of Chesterton, started the foundation after her son was deployed to Iraq last year. She formed the Military HEROS Foundation, Inc., also known as M-HEROS, which stands for Mental Health Extras Restoring Our Soldiers.

DINNER & AUCTION | Hobart
A benefit dinner and silent auction has been planned for the Smith family of Hobart to help with medical and other expenses associated with the illness of their daughter. The event, sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church and School and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. March 30 at the Trinity Lutheran School Gutzler Gymnasium, 891 S. Linda St. Mike and Mary Smith’s 13-year-old daughter, Christina, an eighth-grader at Hobart Middle School, is recovering from acute transverse myelitis and is receiving extensive physical therapy. The event will include an Italian dinner consisting of pasta, salad, bread sticks, drink and dessert. There will be entertainment, a silent auction, door prizes and a bake sale. Carry-outs are available. Tickets are available in advance for $7 for adults, $4 for children 4 to 12. Younger children will eat free. Tickets at the door will be $8 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12.

PRAYER & PRAISE | East Chicago
The Salvation Army's Divisional Youth Department, the office in charge of all youth work in the greater Chicagoland area, created Prayer and Praise Nights geared specifically toward the 14- to 25-year-old demographic. These worship services, done by youth and for youth, bring relevant teachings, practical insights, and meaningful worship music in a nonthreatening environment. Held once a month, each service takes place at a different Salvation Army location. The next Prayer and Praise Night will be held at 7 p.m. March 28 at the East Chicago Corps, 513 W. Chicago Ave.

SAMARITAN SKEDADDLE | Chesterton
Training sessions for the 2008 Samaritan Skedaddle will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. April 1, 8, 15, and 22 at Duneland Health & Wellness Institute, 810 Michael Drive. The Samaritan Skedaddle is an annual 5K Run/Walk to support the Samaritan Counseling Centers Inc. of Northwest Indiana. Proceeds from the event will aid clients in need of fee subsidy. Training will cover proper footwear and attire; training plans for beginners, walkers and seasoned runners; stretching and strength; preventing common injuries; nutrition; and a question- and answer session. There is a 10-person minimum for the free classes registration is required.
The Samaritan Skedaddle will be held April 26. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. and the Kids’ Fun Race (age 9 and under) begins at 10 a.m. The race course will run along the shores of Lake Michigan.

GET A GRANT | Jasper, Newton counties
Jasper Foundation, Inc. and the Newton County Community Foundation wish to announce two rounds of grants for this year from their undesignated fund. Grant applications for the first round are available for Jasper County and Newton County nonprofit groups and are due by April 1. Areas of interest include education, arts and culture, social services, health and historic preservation. Applications may be obtained at www.jasperfdn.org. Hobart/Lake Station branch of Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April needs adult volunteers to help with its April 26 home repair blitz. There is a particular need for skilled carpenters, electricians, roofers, plumbers and other tradespeople. CANDLELIGHT BOWL | Highland
A candlelight bowl to benefit Camp Quality, Illinois will take place at 10 p.m. March 29 at Plaza Lanes, 8101 Kennedy Ave. It is sponsored by Knights of Pythias Lake Co. 215. Camp Quality is a camp and year-round support organization for children with cancer. Tickets are $25 per person and are only sold in pairs. This includes three games, shoe rental, food and pop. Bowlers must be 18 or older. Nonbowlers can attend for $10 per person, which includes food and pop. There will be raffles and door prizes. Tickets are only available in advance.

Mental Health America of Porter County will hold the 21st annual Antiques and Collectibles Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 29 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 30 at the Porter County Expo Center, Ind. 49 at Division Road. Admission is $4. Children younger than 12 years will be admitted free. The event features a Porter County's Own Antique Revue from 6 to 9 p.m. March 28. The casual evening will feature free appraisals, silent auction, appetizer buffet and an early start on shopping. Dealers' booths will be open for sales. Tickets for Porter County's Own Antique Revue will be $25, and there will be a cash bar. The antiques show will feature different types of dealers with an array of antiques and collectibles such as antique glassware, Coca-Cola collections, furniture and toys. Concessions will be available for purchase. The antiques show is a major benefit fundraiser for Mental Health America of Porter County, a nonprofit organization that has been promoting mental wellness in the
community for more than 54 years. Dealers' booths are available for rent at $100.
