BOYS BASKETBALL

MICHIGAN CITY | Dusty Young took one last glimpse at the Michigan City basketball court, turned around and jogged off into the night, presumably to find himself a bed.

After playing in a morning baseball doubleheader, the LaCrosse senior participated in the United Way 2008 Charity All-Star basketball game and picked up some hardware along the way.

Young was crowned the 3-point shootout champion as he knocked off LaPorte's Matt Dunfee in the finals. Michigan City's Jarrod Jones won the Slam Dunk contest and La Lumiere's De'Andre Haskins won MVP honors as his Blue team defeated Young's Red team 91-75.

"Overall this was just a really fun experience," Young said, "This was a great note to end everything on."

Young never looked fazed by his long day, leading the Red team with 21 points and five 3-pointers. Young was teamed South Central's Ethan Kitchell who finished with four points and two rebounds.

"This was just awesome to be at it, for such a good cause," Kitchell said. "I walked out here and people were asking for my autograph. That was neat. I've never had that happen before."

The All-Star game is in its first year of existence, and Indiana Mr. Basketball's Dan Palombizio (1981) and Delray Brooks (1984) returned to coach both teams and help judge the slam dunk contest.

"It's great to be able to showcase basketball to some kids and get them involved in the sport," Palombizio said. "I like coming back to my high school along with Delray and being able to help out."

The showcase game itself was a collection of high-octane offense and very little defense. The Blue team was led by Haskins (undecided) and Luka Mirkovic (Northwestern) as each scored 24 points. Jones, who will be attending Ball State next season, added 17 points and eight rebounds.

"They had three D1 prospects on the team, and we just couldn't compete with their size," Young said. "It was all in good fun regardless of the outcome."

Blue 91, Red 75
LaCrosse's Dusty Young scored 21 points to lead the Red team in a losing effort.
