SOUTH BEND, Ind. | Joseph E. Kernan, the father of former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan, died last week in Washington, D.C.
The elder Kernan, who died June 30, was 85, the South Bend Tribune reported.
A former South Bend resident, he was a teacher, coach, businessman, stockbroker and a U.S. Navy aviator during World War II. In 1965, he moved to Washington, D.C., and helped establish the Upward Bound program. He later worked for the Small Business Administration for 20 years.
Kernan was interred Thursday at Norbeck Memorial Park in Olney, Maryland. A memorial ceremony and reception followed at Manor Country Club in Rockville, Md.
