MET OPERA 'LIVE' | Region

Noon Saturday the New York City's Metropolitan Opera will present Richard Strauss' "Salome" "live" on screen at noon at three local movie theaters -- Valparaiso Commons, 700 Porter's Vale Blvd.; Portage 16 IMAX, 6550 U.S. 6; and Schererville Showplace 16, 875 Deer Creek Drive. Acclaimed soprano Deborah Voigt will host, and at the conclusion, HD cameras will take movie-goers backstage for a rare behind-the-scenes view of the Met. "Salome" is the second performance of the season as part of The Met: Live in HD series and will be transmitted live from New York via satellite in high definition. Reaching more than 900,000 fans around the world last season through live and encore presentations, the series offers opera fans exclusive features, live interviews with cast and crew, insightful short documentaries and birds'-eye views of the productions. Ticket prices vary by location.

CASINO ROYALE & POKER | Highland

FALL FEST AND CARS | Munster

An all-you-can-eat fish fry will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1288 S. GHOSTS AMONG US | Crown Point

The curious are invited to join us for an evening of paranormal experiences at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Marian Education Center at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Cher Wright, of Paranormal Sciences, will cover basic theories, experiences, equipment used and information about the paranormal field. Wright is the Northwest Indiana Representative of American Ghost Society. This agency was founded in 1996 by Troy Taylor, the author of over 55 books on the paranormal and history. It is a nation-wide organization networking professional ghost hunters from all over the country. She has served on the board of directors and held officer positions in the Indiana Ghost Trackers as PR officer, and served as Investigation Coordinator along with being a team leader on investigations as well (though her group is not affiliated with Indiana Ghost Trackers). She founded her own group, Paranormal Sciences, and teaches classes on the subject matter in Valparaiso, Portage and Merrillville.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE - CHARLIE'S HUGS | Valparaiso

6 to 8 p.m. Monday members of the Healing Hearts Grief Support invite the public to join them in a memorial and celebration of lives of loved ones lost at he Mental Health Association of Porter County building, 402 E. Indiana Ave. This unique ceremony will focus on the circle of life as celebrants are invited to water a newly planted tree and share names of those they mourn. Refreshments will follow with a time for sharing and celebrating positive memories. This is the first of what will be an annual memorial hosted by MHA. Autumn was chosen as it a time of change and mirrors the change that occurs with the loss of a loved one. We are calling it “Charlie’s Hugs” in memory of Charlie Hendrix a member of the support group who passed this year. There is no charge, all ages welcome. Call to reserve a spot.

The City of Crown Point is hosting family-friendly event from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 18 to celebrate the fall season at Beacon Hill Plaza on Broadway. CORN MAZE | Lowell

Make your way through a life-size puzzle of corn when more than 10 acres of cornfield become a maze featuring an "Astronomy" theme from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends through Oct. 26 at Buckley Homestead County Park, north of the picnic shelters on Hendricks Street. Join the challenge by finding all the clues and answering the multiple-choice questions posted throughout the maze. Divide into teams and see which team can answer the most Buckley Challenge Questions. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children 5 to 12. Younger children enter free, but all children 11 and younger must be accompanied by someone older than 18. Smoking, alcohol, glass or dogs are not permitted in the corn maze. PARK HAY RIDES | Lake County

Reservations for tractor-drawn hay rides are offered at the following Lake County park sites in September and October: Lemon Lake, Stoney Run, Oak Ridge Prairie, Deep River, and Buckley Homestead County Parks. Maximum number per ride is 25 adults (more children). Cost on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays is $75 per ride, and from Monday through Thursday it is $50 per ride.Horse-drawn hay rides at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3603 Belshaw Road in Lowell, are $100 per ride (only during daylight hours). Special Needs hay rides are available at Oak Ridge Prairie, 301 S. Colfax St., Griffith, during daylight hours.  The hay wagon is able to carry people in wheelchairs.  Regular prices apply.  Time and day reservations are dependent upon availability of driver.

PARK PROGRAMS | Hobart

Hobart Parks and Recreation Department has a full schedule of classes and programs starting now and detailed in a brochure available at the park office, 111 E. Old Ridge Road, as well as other locations in he community. Included are fitness classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the community center, porcelain painting classes on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings at the park annex building, a duplicate bridge learning program and scrapbooking classes for adults, as well as an activity program for preschoolers and a cheerleading program for youths.

OPEN-SKATE | Flossmoor

H-F Ice Arena has open-skate sessions for practice or recreation from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 8 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is $6 per person. Families can attend open skate from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sundays. A family of four can skate for $20. Skate rental is available. STEPPIN' CLASS | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a Chicago-style Steppin' Dance class at the Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Chicago-style steppin' is an urban-style ballroom dancing with intricate spins and turns to an eight-beat count. Wear leather-soled shoes to class. FISH FRY | Westville

Westville United Methodist Church hosts Chef Charley and Crew's all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday. The menu is Alaskan pollock (baked or fried), French fries or baked potato, coleslaw, roll with butter, a drink (coffee, punch or water). Shrimp, chicken strips and hot dogs also available. The United Methodist Youth will sell soda for 50 cents to fund mission projects. The United Methodist Women will have a variety of desserts for $1 each. The cost is $7.50 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4.50 for children ages 3-10, and free for children younger than 3.

BREAD BOOTH | Lowell

Wednesday is still Bread Day in downtown Lowell. The Lowell Downtown Merchants Association is again hosting the Labriola Bread Booth from 2 to 6 p.m. (or until sold out) Wednesdays. The artisan bread is baked fresh daily and sold on East Commercial Avenue in front of Sickinger’s Jewelry store. Cheese from Fair Oaks Farm have been added to the cart this year. During inclement weather, the booth will be moved inside the store. Also downtown on Wednesdays, Tish's Antiques will add a produce booth outside her shop and Bon Super Marche will sell fresh flowers. Other merchants are welcome to add outdoor sales.

INDIAN CAMP | Lowell

The Potawatomi, a tribe of the Woodland Indians from Wisconsin, prospered and expanded into Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana before being removed to Kansas and Oklahoma in the 1830s. Visitors can see how the Potawatomi lived, the wigwam home, clothing with decorations, wild and cultivated foods, at a Woodland Indiana Camp set up at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Hear the stories, smell the cooking fire, and feel the bark of the willow saplings in the wigwam frame as reenactors live the lifestyle of those who lived here in 1750. The camp of the Callumic Band of Great Lakes Woodland Alliance is in the back 80 acres of the park, just southeast of the pioneer farm. Follow the pathway behind the cabin. Visit the site and talk with the reenactors during the weekend of Oct. 25 and 26.
