EAST CHICAGO | A blueprint for citywide development over the next five years is expected to be approved by the end of the month.

Two years in the making, the so-called "comprehensive plan" -- a coordinated framework for future land use, housing, infrastructure and transportation improvements -- was unanimously adopted by the Plan Commission on Monday afternoon.

Using economic and real estate market data, environmental analyses and comments from numerous workshops with residents, a five-company team of specialists drafted the comprehensive plan to address the city's weaknesses and build on its strengths.

Developer The Lakota Group, architect BauerLatoza Studio and financing expert S.B. Friedman & Co., all of Chicago, transportation specialist RQAW, of Indianapolis, and civil engineer Huff & Huff, of Oak Brook, Ill., all contributed to the plan.

Approval by the City Council is the final step toward its implementation, and City Planner Dwayne Williams said his office would be drafting the measure in ordinance form for the consideration by the council this month.

" patience fgj, all in good time, the wheels are still rolling, when the train stops, hold on tight, this ride is all about the people! "

" Wow, I hope this ends up being hugely successful. The article is pretty vague with a lack of details but if this plan is successful there is hope for a few other cities and towns in NWI that need help. My only hope is that the crime and deterioration don't simply move to an adjacent town in Lake County but move out of our area all together. "

" yes we east chicago residents are planning for the future!

New Mayor
New chief of police
New yes council for the people not the mayor!
New workers that are quailified
New start for the citizens of east chicago, no more broken promises, no more lies
New outlook for our failing schools and an elected school board not one that gets paid whether our kids pass or fail.
New workers that live in east chicago so the money stays here.
We are waiting, we are watching, we are voters!! "

" It appears that the group of consultants are wasting more money that it will take to implement their ideas.
Hay mayor and other elected officials, do the job you were elected for and dump the consultants. Face the facts, small towns in NW IN are on life support. "

" The school city can't even pay its NIPSCO bill, but there's always money to pay consultants to draw pretty pie-in-the-sky pictures. I guess the city is in line right behind General Motors looking for their handout. "

the skies above are (highest property taxes in the state) clear again,

so let's sing a song of (fear from rising crime rate) cheer again, happy days are here again (???) "
