CHICAGO | Ford will eliminate the jobs of 792 workers at its Chicago Assembly Plant when it reduces production to one shift Nov. 3.

Although the announcement of the shift cut was reported in early September, Ford didn't release the exact number of employees losing their jobs until filing a Worker Notification and Retraining Act with the state. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity released that information this week.

The plant at the intersection of 126th Street and Torrence Avenue employs more than 600 temporary part-time workers among its 2,100 hourly workers. All the temporary positions are being cut along with some full-time workers with the lowest seniority.

The one-shift production will meet customer demand for the plant's products, which include the Ford Taurus, the Ford Taurus X, the Mercury Sable and the Lincoln MKS, plant manager Anthony Hoskins has said.

Ford product sales dropped 34.5 percent in September compared to sales in the same month in 2007. Compared to September 2007, Taurus sales dipped 25 percent, Taurus X sales fell 63.9 percent and Mercury Sable sales dropped 57.7 percent, the company has reported.

Ford spokeswoman Angie Kozleski said buy-out packages will be offered to all the plant's full-time workers.
