Safeway will shut 14 Chicago area stores, remodel 20
Times and Times Wire reports
Dominick's, the Chicago grocery chain owned by Safeway Inc., will shut 14 stores by April, including one in Calumet City, and will remodel 20 locations to add more organic foods and produce.
The closings will reduce the number of Dominick's locations to 83, the company said Friday. Safeway didn't say how many jobs would be affected, and spokesman Brian Dowling didn't immediately return a phone message left before regular business hours.

Dominick's, which Safeway acquired in 1998, said the closures and remodeling are part of plans to grow sales and boost profit. The grocery chain is adding natural foods, organics and more perishable items in an effort to appeal to customers seeking healthier foods.
Safeway said it would record a charge related to the 14 store closings, without providing a specific figure. Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway is the third-largest U.S. grocery seller with more than 1,700 stores.
Safeway shares in New York Stock Exchange composite trading have risen 54 percent over the past 12 months.
