MADE IN INDIANA -- Bars, restaurants, liquor stores now carry local brews
Described as "full-bodied" and "aggressive, but balanced," Three Floyds' craft beers are definitely not wimpy brews.
"Our tag line, 'It's Not Normal,' pretty much describes it," said head brewmaster Barnaby Struve. "What makes us different is that we stand out. We're not middle-of-the-road, not pedestrian. Our beer is memorable."
Those bold ales, which are brewed year around, carry such names as Alpha King Pale Ale, Robert the Bruce, Gumballhead and Blackheart. And they've become popular libations with in a 150-mile radius of the Munster micro-brewery that creates them.
"Our first draft was sold in Chicago. All the good bars up there carry our beer," Struve said.
Originally, the company expanded its distribution to nine states, but later the owners saw increased demand in the Chicagoland market. The decision was made to concentrate regionally, the owners said.
Bottles and kegs of draft beers can be found in liquor stores, bars and restaurants in Chicago, Northwest Indiana and Indianapolis. Keeping distribution within a two- or three-hour drive from the brewery also keeps the product fresh, Struve said.
The 3,000-square-foot brewery crafts about 6,000 barrels a year, according to the company. Each barrel equals 31 gallons, Struve said. That's a small amount compared with other micro-breweries, such as Chicago's Goose Island, which Struve said makes 70,000 to 90,000 barrels a year.
"We're a small, regional brewery," he said. "We don't have inventory. We're sold out all the time."
Craft beers, such as those brewed at Three Floyds, are a segment of the market that's growing, Struve said.
"These beers make up 12 to 14 percent of the market."
Seasonal tastes help dictate what Three Floyds brewery produces, Struve said.
"You have to make a spectrum of flavors -- easier, lighter in summer, heavier in winter," he said.
The company has introduced a different seasonal beer each month of the year.
