'Bleach the Movie' debuts on local screens in S'ville, Portage two nights next week
"Sex and the City: The Movie" isn't the only film opening this summer based on a popular television series.
"Bleach The Movie: Memories of Nobody," will hit the big screen for two nights only Wednesday and Thursday.
"Memories of Nobody" appears on the screen in high-definition with Cinema Surround Sound in more than 300 select theaters nationwide, including Schererville Showplace and Portage IMAX.
"Memories of Nobody" is adapted from "Bleach," a Japanese anime and manga (graphic novel) series written and illustrated by Tito Kubo that debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2001 before inspiring an animated TV series in 2004.
Episodes of "Bleach" have appeared in the United States on cable's Adult Swim.
Billed as "the ultimate anime experience," the film features an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the talent behind the characters and a first-ever interview with acclaimed Japanese director Noriyuki Abe.
"It's a way to introduce anime to more fans, by putting it on the big screen," said Jim Rhone, owner of Creative Comics in Griffith.
"Anime is very popular with all ages. I had an adult customer go to Wizard World (convention) dressed like it."
Rhone carries select anime manga, in addition to special orders, including "Bleach" and an "Anime Insider" magazine. The May edition featured a several-page spread devoted to the "Bleach" series.
The story of "Memories of Nobody" unfolds in Karakura Town, where unidentifiable spirits known as "Blanks" gather en masse. They are followed by a Soul Reaper named Senna who makes them disappear. Puzzled by it all, two characters (Ichigo and Rukia) uncover an evil plot when a menacing clan tries to kidnap Senna.
"NCM Fathom has experienced great success bringing anime events to movie theaters, and we are excited to bring 'Bleach The Movie: Memories of Nobody' to anime fans across the country this summer," Dan Diamond, vice president of NCM Fathom said.
