FEST IN THE FIRST | Gary

The annual Fest in the First celebration takes place from noon to 6:30 p.m. today on Lake Street in the Miller section of Gary. Free toys, balloons and face painting for children. Entertainment includes the Emerson Jazz Ensemble at 12:30 p.m., Jesse White Tumbler at 1:15, Ronald McDonald magic show at 2:30, Wirt high School JROTC Drill Team and Drum Line at 2:45, Motown Band at 3:30 and a classic auto show. First District businesses, community organizations and vendors will set up food, arts and crafts and information booths.

CHICKEN & NOODLES | Cedar Lake

A Chicken Noodle Dinner will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today in the Fellowship Hall at Cedar Lake United Methodist Church, 7124 W. 137th Place. Menu includes chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, roll, dessert and a beverage at a cost of $6 for adults and $3 for ages 6 to 12; younger children eat free. Carry-outs will be available. Tickets are available from church members or at the door.

HARVEST FLING | Valparaiso

Mental Health of America of Porter County will host Harvest Fling, an old-fashioned night of family fun, line dancing, authentic Appalachian music, food and games from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the David A. Butterfield Pavilion, Calumet and Evans Avenue. MHA Executive Director Mary Hodson said in these trying economic times, MHA wanted to offer an affordable and fun night out for the whole family. It will feature Appalachian music performed by The Oxcart Ramblers. Line dance performances and lessons by Just Us & Friends. Audience members can also show off their dancing skills in a dance contest. There will be games for all ages, a bounty of light refreshments and desserts, and a silent auction with items in hand-made baskets created and donated by the Northwest Hoosier Basket Guild. A cash bar will also be offered. Tickets are $10 each, $15 for a couple, and $20 for a family. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.

GOLF SCRAMBLE AND STEAK FRY | St. John

Cedar Lake Knights of Columbus 3840 will host its annual golf scramble outing and steak fry Sunday at Palmira Golf Club. Cost is $75 for 18 holes of golf, ½ cart, and lunch after ninth hole served at K of C Hall. There will also be snacks and beer, door prizes, steak dinner and golf prizes. Steak fry only is $18.

RUMMAGE IN THE PARK | Lake Station

Lake Station Parks and Recreation Department will host Rummage in the Park, a rummage sale, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Riverview Park, 2701 Ripley St. Spaces are 10-by-10-foot and rent for $10.
