A 25-minute piece about a romance that blossomed at a Whiting soda fountain during the 1950s will highlight Generation Dance Theatre's 10th Anniversary Concert at Towle Community Theater in Hammond.
"It's about my mother who was a soda jerk in the '50s in Whiting," said Kathleen Dominiak, Generations Dance Theatre Director. "She comes in and recalls where she met her husband. My students and the company dance this one moment of her life."
Dominiak is an adjunct professor of dance in the Valparaiso University Department of Theater where she teaches dance and choreographs for VU's Dance Ensemble. It's those students who will dance with the multigenerational talent of Dominiak's Hammond-based Generations dance group.
The dance concert will feature modern jazz ballet and social dance highlighting the years of dance at Generations.
"There will be a couple of new pieces but most of it is bringing back an array from over the last 10 years," Dominiak said.
The array of dances is equaled by the concert's range of dancers. Dominiak's talent ranges from ages 6 through 75.
"I don't believe in dance being for people of a certain age," Dominiak said. "I believe it's for anyone whether they choose to dance or choose to watch."
Dominiak's parents, both in their 70s, choose to dance.
"They have the best time," Dominiak said.
Dominiak, who has won NIETF awards for acting ("The Importance of Being Earnest") and choreography ("Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"), said the Towle concert will reach out to an audience in a different way than a typical recital.
"Dance does the same thing as art and music -- it tells a story," she said.
