Chicago's dance community and other guests paid tribute to Joffrey Ballet cofounder Gerald Arpino Monday during a poignant memorial at the Auditorium Theatre. The two-hour tribute to Arpino, who died Oct. 29, featured commentary and remembrances by Mayor Richard M. Daley, various dancers and current artistic director Ashley C. Wheater and a video tribute, performances by Joffrey dancers and a moment of silence.

"We are here today to pay tribute to a great man and to celebrate his wonderful life," Ashley C. Wheater said. "It is a testament to his work that the Joffrey Ballet has thrived here in the heartland of America."

Mayor Daley told the crowd he was honored to be at the memorial to pay tribute to such a legend whose work and passion helped make Chicago the contemporary "cultural center" it is. "The Joffrey has contributed greatly to our city," Daley said. "It is our job now to continue to keep alive the spirit of Gerry so it continues to provide inspiration to the people of Chicago."

Members of the company performed touching Arpino works such as "Light Rain Pas de Deux," "Round of Angels," and the exuberant "Trinity." Throughout the memorial, Arpino's box seat at the Auditorium remained illuminated by a lone spotlight.

In a fitting final tribute, dancers, amid shouts of bravo, placed dozens of candles on the stage with many of the performers giving a nod to the star choreographer's empty chair.
