Stone Temple Pilots brought their reunion tour to Hammond on Thursday and did not disappoint fans at The Venue, Horseshoe Casino's new 2,500-seat multipurpose entertainment facility.

Borrowing from the tracklisting of 2003's greatest hits CD "Thank You," vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Robert DeLeo guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz treated the audience to the staples of alternative radio.

"Plush," "Creep," "Wicked Garden" and "Vasoline" brought cheers, while "Down," "Big Bang Baby," "Too Cool Queenie" and others from the band's latter releases introduced the casual fan to the depth of STP's catalog.

Studio Hammond

The idea of Stone Temple Pilots recording a new album this fall may be more solid than rumor. The band spent quite a bit of time jamming on stage with the DeLeos working through riffs, while Weiland worked on melodies and lyrics.

The jams were steeped in bluesy riffs and fret work by guitarist Dean DeLeo and running bass lines by his brother.

"You guys don't mind if we write our new record here tonight do you?" Weiland asked the crowd. "It's 'Studio Hammond.'"

14 years to the day

John Labriola turned 36 on Thursday and wore a smile as he left The Venue. The Crestwood resident said it was 14 years to the day since he first saw STP, at the 1994 Illinois State Fair.

"They were just as good tonight as they were then," Labriola said. "A nice intimate venue. They put on a good show."
