'Sweeney Todd' stars come to Towle Theater for intimate concert Monday night
Broadway is coming to Hammond.
Lauren Molina and Benjamin Magnuson who star as Johanna and Anthony in the 2005 Broadway revival of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," will perform in a cabaret-style concert at the Towle Community Theater Monday.
On a rare night off, Molina and Magnuson, in Chicago with the national tour of "Sweeney Todd," will perform an eclectic mix of rarely heard covers, quirky originals and creatively orchestrated standards.
"This is the only venue they're playing during their two weeks in Chicago," said Towle Managing Director Jeff Casey.
"It's a really great opportunity for the Towle to bring Broadway performers to the region."
Molina and Magnuson, playing musical instruments ranging from the cello, ukulele, guitar and piano, to saxophone, trombone, accordion and more, perform in different styles.
"Ben's musical style is rock-driven, with a seductive energy, while mine maintains a playful, light and quirky quality," Molina said.
"We complement each other well. Ben and I are both very versatile performers, with eclectic tastes in music. This concert will showcase a very different side of our talents from what you see in 'Sweeney Todd.' "
Whatever else they choose to play, Molina will include original songs from her new album, "Doo-Be-Doo." Molina and Magnuson will be joined by two other "Sweeney Todd" cast members, Katrina Yaukey and David Garry.
According to Casey, this performance came about because Scott Kokandy, a Towle Advisory Board member, who saw the revival of "Sweeney Todd" on Broadway, sent an e-mail to Molina, and she responded. He read Molina and Magnuson were looking for venues they could play on their days off.
"This tour has been in the works for quite some time, so we thought we'd plan ahead and make our own music all over the country," Magnuson said.
"We both are very excited about making our Chicagoland cabaret debut at the Towle Theater."
Casey hopes Molina and Magnuson will enjoy performing at the Towle, which is rolling out the red carpet.
"If they enjoy themselves, they may be willing to come back. In the tight-knit theater community, that would enhance our reputation and might lead to more of these performances," he said.
"We're trying to enhance the experience for them; we're bringing in massage therapists, we're taking them out to dinner and the performance will be followed by a VIP reception at El Taco Real (restaurant)."
VIP tickets to the post-performance reception with the performers at El Taco Real in Hammond are $45.
