A CHRISTMAS WISH -- Ralphie, played by actor Peter Billingsly, has become one of the favorite characters during the holiday season because of his quest for a bb gun from Santa Claus, despite the protest of everyone around him. A new festival dedicated to the movie "A Christmas Story," held in Hammond, Nov. 22, 2008, is looking for "Ralphie Look-A-Likes." (Image courtesy of MGM Archive and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment)
In my From the Farm column on Wednesday's foodFare cover, I wrote a reminder about the fudge recipe contest I'll be judging Saturday in downtown Hammond as part of the first "A Christmas Story Holiday Festival," which also celebrates the classic 1983 holiday film's 25th anniversary.
I thought it was also only fair to include a reminder about the many other great events going throughout the day beginning at 2 p.m. For full details, including times, contests and opportunities, visit nwi.com/achristmasstory.
One of the events everyone is excited about is the "Ralphie and little brother Randy Look-a-Like Contest," which begins with registration at 1:30 p.m. and judging at 2 p.m. at the Towle Theater. The movie is based on the writings of Hammond native, the late author Jean Shepherd.
I want to share a nice letter I received this week, including photos, from readers Kristy and Edward Kutch of Michigan City, who insist their now 24-year-old son Joe, looked very much like Ralphie while growing up. I've even included a photo for readers to judge for themselves.
"Hello Phil - I saw you on television this past weekend and must share these pictures of our son Joe, now 24 years old (picture also attached) and now beyond the 'chubby-cheek' stage. The picture of him chowing down on Cheetos was taken at his First Communion party, but you can see that the glasses accented his Ralphie-like look!
My husband and I have always enjoyed Ralphie's Christmas movie. Over the years, we've even had next-door neighbors like "the Bumpuses," famous for their animals and assorted pets.
I hope that the Hammond event will be a huge success!
