Fox to rock Cedar Lake

Fox is one regional band that has not forgotten rock 'n' roll music is supposed to be about having fun.

These four guys began with that mindset as college buddies in the early 1970s and eventually supported themselves through four years of study at Purdue, by playing more than 100 gigs a year. They opened shows for artists such as Charlie Daniels Band, REO Speedwagon, Canned Heat and Styx.

Flash forward 30 years and all the student loans have long been paid off. "We do this for fun," said rhythm guitarist David Owen, the one responsible for getting the band back together in 2004.

Owen wanted to do something special for his daughter's wedding, so he sent each former band member a CD recording of three songs recorded during a show they did in 1975, requesting they re-learn their parts so Fox could play them live at the wedding.

Surprisingly, all agreed and that first mini-concert marked the end to the quarter century hiatus Fox had taken.

Now, five years later, Fox is still on the run with all original members -- Owen, bassist Gerry Bishop, drummer George Brenn, and lead guitarist/keyboardist Mark Sloan.

"We had so much fun playing that night, that we decided to put the band back together just for kicks," explained Bishop.

"We only do a few shows each year because we all have busy lives with careers and families," Owen said.

"We're not trying to relive a certain time in our lives. We just love to play music," Sloan said "We enjoy just practicing and rehearsing." Brenn agrees and refers to Fox as "a musical brotherhood."

The enjoyment spills from the stage and into their audience as they rip through cover tunes by bands such as the Kinks, Beatles, Stones, Humble Pie, Rascals and others.

They also have a few original songs from when they pooled money a few years ago to live out a long-shelved, collective rock 'n' roll dream.

The four took a road trip to Memphis and laid down self-penned songs in the hallowed confines of Sun Recording Studio, where many of their own musical heroes (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash) had rolled tape decades earlier.

"That was such a huge thrill," recalled Owen.
