Bringing the world renowned Vienna Boys Choir to Valparaiso University makes for a perfect fit in the eyes of VU Center for the Arts director Jeff Hazewinkel.

"We have a great place for choral music in our Chapel of the Resurrection," he said. "It's a natural mesh between the great facility for choral music and one of the world's most well known choral ensembles."

Scheduled to make their first performance at VU on Nov. 6, the Vienna Boys Choir was officially founded in the mid 1920s, but its origins can be traced back to the 15th century, when Emperor Maximilian I commissioned a six-boy singing ensemble to perform alongside his court musicians. Composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri were known to have worked with the choir, and Franz Schubert and Jacobus Gallus were members of the ensemble.

Seen and heard on scores of holiday and classical music television specials over the course of the last four decades, the Vienna Boys Choir -- which is made up of approximately 100 singers between the ages of 10 and 14 -- are divided into four performing ensembles, with each group spending 11 weeks per year performing for audiences worldwide.

The Vienna Boys Choir's Nov. 6. performance at VU's Chapel of the Resurrection is a collaborative effort between the university and the Valparaiso City Festivals and Events Office, whom Hazewinkel said proposed bringing the choir to the region.

"There's a long-standing tradition of quality and excellence that they bring to choral music," Hazewinkel said. "There's a uniqueness of the sound of the young male voice. There's nothing else that can duplicate it."

The current programming of the choir's fall touring schedule covers a nearly 500-year span, ranging from "Memento Salutis Auctor" written by 16th century English Renaissance composer William Byrd to selections from 20th century musicals such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Hair."

The Choir is also slated to perform selections by composers such as Mozart, Johann Strauss, Jr., Joseph Haydn and Giuseppe Verdi.

"They perform a wide variety in their repertoire, from classical to some more modern pop things," Hazewinkel said.
