Singer songwriter Rob Thomas had no problem rocking The Venue at Hammond's Horseshoe Casino Friday. The Matchbox Twenty lead singer performed a nearly 2 1/2-hour solo show to a full house and never waned in energy. Thomas, who proved in prime vocal form, delivered a mix of ballads and upbeat numbers. The fine acoustics at the Venue allowed for Thomas' strong vocals to shine throughout the entire concert. On his rousing playlist were a standout version of "This is How a Heart Breaks;" "Natural,"; the poignant "Getting Late," which he wrote about the passing of time and the nearness of death; "Someday,"; and"Cradlesong."
Thomas also surprised audiences by performing an acoustic and slow version of his smash hit "Smooth," which was recorded with Carlos Santana. His updated concert version featured a prominent Spanish guitar and a touch of jazzy/sultry overtones. Opening for Thomas was Carolina Liar. ELOISE MARIE VALADEZ
