It's summer, and you're bound to be pool- or beach-side at some point, so there's no escaping the fact that you need a swimsuit. This realization doesn't have to bring a grimace to your face.

There is a swimsuit out there that is flattering, comfortable and affordable.

The one-piece, in styles ranging from retro to sleek and sophisticated, never goes out of style. If you're really daring, look for the sleek cut-away styles that nearly qualify as a two-piece. They're sometimes called monokinis. Regular bikinis are abundant in an assortment of prints, polka dots, citrus shades, primary brights and metallics. Ruching and ruffles, piping and peplums, and beading and bows are some of the details you'll find on this year's swimsuits. For those with a less-than-perfect figure, the one-piece halter suit remains the most flattering style you can wear.

Manufacturers have become increasingly consumer friendly with more labels being sold in separates. Many have started putting bra size tops in their collections instead of sizing them as small, medium and large. This not only offers a better fit, but in most cases more support.

Better suit construction and improved fabrics offer support and shaping. Swimsuit trends follow some of the ready-to-wear trends such as one-shoulder styles, mixing of patterns and sequin trims. Trendy or plain, look for a suit that will be comfortable when it's wet as well as dry, and one that will add to, not subtract from, your summer fun.

THINGS TO REMEMBER BEFORE BUYING A SWIMSUIT

Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a new swimsuit:

* Take a long, honest look in the mirror and decide which part of your body you want to accentuate, and which part needs to be de-emphasized.

* If you're bottom heavy, choose solid, dark colors for the bottom part of your suit, and stay away from ruffles and fancy hardware that will bring attention to your hips.

* If you have a full bust, choose an underwire top for support. If it fits properly, it also will be comfortable.

* To make a small bust appear larger, choose one with ruffles or ruching in a bright print.

* A long torso doesn't mean you have to bare your belly in a bikini. A tankini offers length and provides coverage.

* Make sure you get a swimsuit in the right size. You won't necessarily wear the same size you wear in shorts or dresses. And the size you need may vary with the style of swimsuit.

* Your bust should not spill over the top of the suit, your tummy shouldn't bulge over the bottom of a two-piece, and the legs of the swimsuit shouldn't cut into your thighs.

* If you prefer a one-piece but would like to be a bit more daring, try on a cut-away suit.

* Be careful when choosing a skirted suit. Sometimes it adds weight instead of hiding it.

* Remember that V's -- a V-neckline, for instance, or a V pattern on the suit -- are almost always flattering.
