Where can you find dishes as diverse as prehistoric hog eggs, pig pickles and Indy pie?
Those inventive offerings are all starring on the menu at Hi-Fi Roadhouse in Highland.
The restaurant, 2907 45th St., was established last October by local physician Michael Macuga.
"Since we're called a roadhouse, he wanted to feature items with dishes that have coast to coast (influences)," said Trisha Sohovich, co-senior manager with Mateo Gurrolla and Oscar Suarez. "This is an opportunity to bring something unique and different to Highland."
The menu is indeed appealing and unique boasting items with interesting flavor fusions as well as good old-fashioned barbecue and pizza.
The clever names of recipes spark laughter among diners.
For instance, who would ever guess prehistoric hog eggs are breaded, fried, hard-boiled eggs rolled in Louisiana hot sauce? And, no joke, pig pickles are battered, deep-fried dill pickles while Indy pie is Margarita-style pizza.
We visited Hi-Fi for a late lunch on a recent Saturday and not only enjoyed the dining experience but the fun, modern atmosphere as well.
Our host seated us at a booth in the middle of the restaurant where we could see the entire eatery. Its sleek decor includes a large map along the side wall, blue-hued seats, red lamps and plants throughout.
My companion and I found the recipe titles fascinating and were intrigued by the presentations and components of certain dishes. Our friendly waiter eagerly answered our questions.
We decided to try a mix of dishes -- many were tempting!
Our choices included "Da mini corn dogs" ($5.95), Southwest egg rolls ($6.95), the veggie black bean burger ($8.95) and grilled tuna steak ($17.95).
The corn dogs and egg roll appetizers were creatively presented and served with flavorful sauces. (Homemade honey mustard for the corn dogs and jalapeno jelly enhanced the egg rolls).
Hi-Fi's veggie black bean burger was a hefty blend of red peppers, roasted garlic and onions. It was served with green chilies and guacamole on tomato focaccia. A thumbs up for the tuna steak entree, too, with its flavorful peach/lemongrass, mango chutney and chili glaze.
We also enjoyed a cup of baked potato/bacon soup ($2.95) and the Wedge salad ($7.95).
Other menu items at Hi-Fi include Americana specialties such as jambalaya, ($8.95); Maryland crab cakes ($18.95): buttermilk fried chicken ($14.95) center-cut Iowa pork chops ( $18.95) and Carolina pulled pork sandwich ($8.50).
Sohovich said many regional items get new twists. The popular dishes are baby back ribs, an appetizer sampler, tuna, crab cakes and salmon. Pizzas are also big sellers.
The restaurant, which seats 270 people, has a party/banquet room and bar featuring a full menu of drinks, high-end wines and liquors.
Guests looking for a pleasant dining experience -- with a date, lunch with colleagues or dinner with the family -- won't go wrong popping into this roadhouse.
