Stay healthy in coming months
In recognition of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month during May, Midtown Athletic Club's Chuck Barnard offers the following tips to stay healthy and safe during the upcoming summer months.
* Warm-up prior to work-out/activities. It is important to stretch your muscles, especially those that will be primarily utilized.
* Use sunscreen. Use a SPF 30 or greater to protect against harmful UV rays.
* Include family in activities. It is equally important for adults and children to be physically active, so consider a family walk or bike ride after dinner and on the weekend.
* Use safety equipment. The use of helmets, knee pads and other activity-specific equipment can help prevent injury.
* Get medical attention if injured. Unless you have medical training, do not assume you can treat yourself. Minor cuts and scrapes can be handled at home, otherwise seek assistance.
* Keep well-hydrated. Be sure to drink water or other beverages with electrolytes, such as sports drinks, to prevent dehydration.
* Wear appropriate activity attire. Hiking boots are most appropriate for time on the trail and sandals are inappropriate for running. Wear appropriate layers and ventilated clothing so you can adjust to changing temperatures.
* Follow proper nutrition. Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, along with lean proteins, will keep you satisfied before, during an after physical activity.
* Cool-down after work-out/activities. It's important to return your heart rate to normal quickly, so walk for the last few minutes after running, swimming or playing active sports such as tennis.
* Take time for your mental health. It's important to reduce stress and improve your mental state.

Healing mentally after a heart attack
A variety of emotions are common after a heart attack, and it's important to take care of them -- as well as your heart.
The American Heart Association offers these recommendations to keep your mind in good health:
* If you are afraid, get all the facts. Talk to your doctor about your concerns, and about what you should expect in the coming months.
* Soothe anxious feelings by talking to a friend or family member.
* Get exercise. It's good for your heart, and it can help alleviate anxiety.
* Spend time doing activities that you enjoy.
* Talk to your doctor if you feel symptoms of depression, which is common after a heart attack.
* Stay social. Establish a network of friends to help you through your difficult time.
Activities for people with Alzheimer's
People with Alzheimer's disease should be kept busy, both mentally and physically. This can be a challenge.
The National Institute on Aging offers these suggestions:
* Keep activities simple and at the person's level.
* Offer more support as the person gets started, and break the activity into small steps.
* Don't push any activity if you notice the person getting agitated.
* If the person enjoys certain activities, try to make them part of a daily routine.
* Have the person assist in the entire routine. At mealtime, for instance, have the person help set the table, make the food and clean up afterward.
