Some facts about concussions:

* You don't have to be knocked out to have one.

* There's no such thing as a "ding." It's a concussion.

* The brain is resilient, but not taking concussions seriously can result in permanent damage. With spring sports seasons about to gear up, for children and adults, it's time for a few reminders about the seriousness of concussions.

Concussion symptoms:

* One or more of these symptoms may be present:

* Headache

* Pressure in the head

* Feeling "funny"

* Feeling "dinged" or dizzy

* Feeling slow

* Vision changes

* Hearing changes

* Balance problems

* Nausea or vomiting

* Confusion

* Abnormal sleeping or eating

* Irritability

* Trouble concentrating

Tips for fighting the flu

* Some things you can do to keep yourself from getting sick:

* If you are at high risk, your doctor may recommend an anti-viral medicine to protect you from the flu, although more drug resistance is being seen this year.

* Wash, wash, wash those hands. Better yet, use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. These kill virus germs on your skin better than soap and water.

* Flu and cold viruses usually are passed on by hand contact, so try to avoid touching door knobs, telephones, etc., where viruses can live; keep your hands away from your eyes and nose, so you don't inoculate yourself with those viruses.

* Stay home when you're sick, and avoid close contact with others who are sick.

* As always, check with your doctor if your symptoms persist or become severe, especially if you have any chronic illness or if you are elderly. McClatchy Newspapers

Get more whole grains

Whole grains are an important part of a healthy diet. They help maintain a healthy body weight and a healthy heart.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests how to include more whole grains in your diet:

* Replace refined foods, such as white bread and white rice, with whole wheat bread and brown rice.

* Use whole wheat pasta in casseroles, macaroni and cheese, and other pasta dishes.

* Snack on whole grain, low-fat chips or popcorn (without salt or butter).

* Cook with whole grain flour. Use whole grain cracker crumbs or bread crumbs as a breading in meatloaf.
