The Lake Station-New Chicago Branch Library, 2007 Central Ave., is offering blood pressure screenings from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday. Miller's Merry Manor will provide the free screenings.
PROSTATE CANCER SCREENINGS | Region
The National Prostate Cancer Coalition is teaming up with local medical centers and hospitals to provide free prostate cancer screenings for men today through Saturday. Screenings will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Lincoln Mall, 300 Lincoln Mall, in Matteson, Ill.; from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Little Company of Mary Hospital, 2800 W. 95th St., Evergreen Park, Ill.; and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Wal-Mart, 4005 W. 167th St., Country Club Hills, Ill. The Portage Fire Department will offer an American Heart Association Heartsaver cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid with AED training from 4 to 10 p.m. Thursday at Fire Station 1, 3401 Swanson Road. This course meets the Indiana requirements for teachers and certified fitness trainers. The cost is $40 per student. Register by calling the fire department. Fit City Valparaiso is challenging local tweens to an "amazing race" through some of Valparaiso's most popular parks. Participants will visit four locations in Valparaiso and complete a variety of challenges with their teams from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. This is a free event for children ages 11 to 14 that is co-sponored by the Tobacco Education and Prevention Coalition. Children may be registered as individuals or as part of a team (up to 6 people on a team).

HEALTH SEMINAR | Calumet City
The Calumet Memorial Park District is hosting a health and wellness seminar from 6 to 8 p.m. April 28 at the Sandridge Fitness Center, 600 Oglesby Ave. Participants will learn tips on losing weight, burning fat, reducing water retention, and becoming healthier overall. There also will be free blood pressure checks and BMI readings. Professional fitness bodybuilder Lewis Calloway will provide a posing demonstration. The fee for the seminar is $5 for Sandridge members, and $8 for the general public.

Lakeshore Public Television is seeking volunteers to help prepare for the Speaking of Women's Health Conference on May 15 at The Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, U.S. 30 and I-65. Volunteers have the opportunity to take part in an event created to educate women about their health, well-being and personal safety in an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie. Duties range from registration, gift bag distribution, people moving, breakfast and lunch set-up and tear down, session monitoring and more. The Cancer Resource Centre, 900 Ridge Road, Suite J, in Muster, offers free support groups led by professional counselors. Groups offer cancer patients and their family/friends an opportunity to share thoughts, feelings and information. The groups explore ways to deal with stress and emotions. * Breast Cancer Support Group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the first Thursday of the month. The group is especially for women coping with a breast cancer diagnosis.
* After Care Breast Cancer Support Group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the second and fourth Mondays of the month. It is for women who have completed their breast cancer treatment.
* Couples Confronting Cancer Together Support Group meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month. The group is for those with cancer and their spouse/significant other.
*Family and Friends Support Group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month. The group for family and friends of cancer patients allows them to share experiences, learn to take care of yourself and support loved ones who have cancer.
* Blood Cancers Support Group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month. The group is designed for adult family/friends and those with a diagnosis of leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or myeloma.
* Wellness Support Group meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. It provides an opportunity to share feelings, receive support and learn ways to cope with the experience of having cancer.

CHOICES Natural Birth and Parenting Network, offers free monthly community meetings the first Wednesday of every month at the Hebron Community Center, 611 N. Main St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. Meet midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, chiropractors breastfeeding consultants and new or expecting families. Registration is not required. Nursing babies are welcome.
