Storage facility eyed for Home Lumber site

The long-vacant Home Lumber site will be given new life, thanks to a local business owner.

Dave Groen is looking to turn the site at 1900 Hart St. into a storage facility for contractors, he told the Plan Commission at its June meeting.

There will be no offices on site, just storage areas, he said.

Groen's site plan looks in order, Planning and Development Director Rick Eberly told the board. Groen will have to make the parking lot lights brighter, because as designed they do not meet the minimum number of foot candles specified in the town's lighting ordinance.

Groen's site plan will go before the board for action at its July 21 meeting. The former Home Lumber is located on Hart between Illinois and Indiana streets.

Town Council changes insurance carrier, saves

The Town Council said it now has a better property, casualty and general liability insurance policy at a much better price.

With a unanimous vote, the council replaced its existing company, Scottsdale Indemnity Co., with Travelers Insurance Co.

Council President Rick Ryfa, R-3rd, noted that the old contract with Scottsdale costs about $266,000.

A quote from Scottsdale for a new contract was $226,000 whereas the winning quote from Travelers was $214,000.

"We will save the town $52,000 in premium costs" over the old policy, said Councilman George Jerome, R-2.

Ryfa said the new policy also includes more coverage than the current one.

Ryfa said the town has saved more than $21,000 on the health insurance policy by removing the previous agent and dealing directly with the company.
