PORTAGE | A man with a scarf covering his face robbed Hampton Inn in Portage, making off with an undetermined amount of cash, Portage police said.

Police said the robber entered the hotel, located at 6353 U.S. 20, about 5:44 a.m. Tuesday, implied he had a gun in his pocket and demanded cash. The female clerk handed over the money, and the man fled.

No one was injured.

Neither the clerk nor the male hotel guest who was in the lobby at the time of the robbery know if the man left the area on foot or in a vehicle. After the robbery, the clerk activated the hotel's panic button, and the hotel guest called 911.

The robber is described as a white man, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was wearing blue jeans, a blue hooded sweat shirt and a black scarf covering his face.

Police said the robber never displayed a gun but had his hand in his sweat shirt pocket and indicated he had a gun.

Anyone with information is asked to call Portage police at (219) 762-3122.
