Crime group to hear about re-entry program

The Eat Hammond/Pullman Crime Watch meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ophelia Steen Community Center, 5927 Columbia Ave., Hammond.

The featured speaker is Sylvia Gibbs, executive director of Offender Re-entry and Community Assistance, Inc. She will talk about the group's purpose and how it works to prepare formerly incarcerated men and women for successful living and responsible citizenship within society. ORCA strives to promote public safety and improve the quality of life for families and communities impacted by the cycle of arrest and re-entry.

The East Chicago Plan Commission meets in special session at 2 p.m. Friday in City Hall Council Chambers, 4525 Indianapolis Blvd.

Sorority honors men in arts in E.C., Hammond

The Eta Kappa Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will host its sixth annual Men of Valor awards program at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Dynasty Banquet Hall, 4141 Calumet Ave., Hammond.

This year's program honors men in the arts in East Chicago and Hammond. The sorority has served the East Chicago and Hammond area for 48 years and annually awards scholarships to local students, supports civic activities and aids educational and cultural growth.

Tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for children 12 and younger. Contact Pamela Wright at (219) 882-8197 for tickets.

Street to be named in honor of E.C. minister

Church officials and parishioners of the New Second Baptist Church are naming a street in honor of the Rev. Dave Williams Sr. and have an unveiling of the new sign at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The street will be called the Rev. Dave Williams Sr. Boulevard. The ceremony is at the church, 3939 Deodar St., East Chicago.
